Soybean Paste Stew

Soybean Paste Stew, also called Doen-Jang Jji Gae is one of the most popular Korean comfort (yet healthy) food. This stew-like recipes can be modified by adding chopped hot peppers or variety of veggie toppings to your taste. The broth can be made with beef or anchovy stock. Soybean paste is full of nutritions and healthy bacteria, and it's so simple and tasty!

  • Soup base:

    - water 900ml (2 cups)

    - beef (1/2 cup, thinly sliced) - can be substituted with anchovi


  • Main ingredients:

    - Mushroom (1/4 cup)

    - Onion (1/4, sliced)

    - Onion (1/4, sliced)

    - Zucchini (1/4, sliced)

    - PH Food's soft tofu (1/4 block)

    - Minced garlic (1tsp)

    - Pepper (1/4, jalepeno or other kinds, sliced)


  • For seasoning:

    - Soybean paste (Doenjang) (1 1/2 Tbl)
  1. Add beef when the water starts boiling and cook for five minutes.

  2. While making beef broth, prepare main ingredients by chopping tofu (5cm X 1cm thick), onion (1~2cm), zucchini (1 cm thick), pepper (3mm thick), and mushroom (1cm thick).

  3. Add the onion, sliced peppers and mushroom to the broth and boil for 5 minutes.

  4. Add soybean paste and stir until it's mixed in the broth.

  5. Add tofu and continue to boil for 1 more minute.

  6. If not enough salty, add more soybean paste to taste.

  7. Serve with a bowl of rice while hot.
